How to Clean Car Floor Mats Effectively?

The method for cleaning car floor mats depends on their material. Below, Wowiper provides a simple and practical cleaning guide for several common materials. You can follow the steps according to your floor mat type.

I. Determine the material of your floor mats.

Generally, there are three types:

  • 1. Loop car floor mats (surface resembles many fine loops, relatively fluffy)
  • 2. Rubber/TPE/Plastic floor mats (firmer, heavier, waterproof, with obvious anti-slip texture)
  • 3. Leather/Wrap-around floor mats (completely wraps around the floor, resembling the material of leather seats, mostly PU leather/leather)

If it’s a combination of “loop + leather,” treat the loop and leather parts separately.

Cleaning Methods by Material:

Different car floor mat materials require different cleaning methods. Choose a low-alkaline or neutral detergent, avoiding alcohol or strong acid/alkali agents that could damage the material.

Material: Cleaning Methods: Precautions
Plastic/Waterproof Rinse with water, or sprinkle with laundry detergent/dish soap, scrub with a brush, and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Alternatively, soak in a neutral detergent for 15-20 minutes before scrubbing. Simple and quick; a cleaning brush can be used to reach deep into the grooves.
Carpet/Plush Dry cleaning is preferred (for better results), or hand washing: Soak in 30℃ warm water with a low-alkaline agent for 10 minutes, gently rub and wash, brush the nap with a soft brush, then spin dry in a spin dryer and air dry in a cool place. Do not expose to direct sunlight to prevent deformation; use a neutral detergent to avoid fading.
Leather Wipe with a damp cloth daily. Washing with water is not recommended to avoid damaging the leather. Keep dry; avoid soaking.

II. Car Floor Mat Cleaning and Care Products and Tools

1. Cleaners

1.1 For Rubber/TPE Floor Mats:

a. All-Purpose Cleaner (APC)
  • Features: This is one of the most commonly used products in car detailing shops. It has a wide range of uses, is weakly alkaline or neutral, and can safely clean various surfaces such as rubber, plastic, fabric, and leather.
  • Usage: Usually needs to be diluted according to the instructions, sprayed onto the floor mats, scrubbed with a brush, and then rinsed clean.
b. Dedicated Rubber Mat Cleaner

Features: Specifically designed for rubber and TPE materials, it has strong cleaning power, quickly breaks down dirt, and the formula usually ensures that it is not slippery after cleaning, restoring the original color of the rubber.

c. DIY Option: Neutral dish soap or soapy water
  • Features: Economical and readily available. It is also quite effective at cleaning everyday stains.
  • Note: Be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid residue making the floor mats slippery.

1.2 For Carpet/Fabric Mats:

a. Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners
  • Foam Cleaner: The most common type. It produces rich foam that encapsulates and breaks down stains. It contains less water and dries relatively quickly. Suitable for daily cleaning and spot cleaning.
  • Spray/Liquid Cleaner: Generally more powerful, penetrating deep into fabric fibers. Some are concentrated solutions and need to be diluted with water before use with a vacuum extractor. Suitable for deep cleaning.

b. Spot Stain Remover:

  • Features: Targets specific stubborn stains such as oil, coffee, ink, and blood. The formula is more targeted, with extremely strong cleaning power.
  • Usage:Use only on small areas of the stain; do not spray over large areas.

2. Conditioners & Protectants

2.1. For Rubber/TPE Car Floor Mats: Rubber Mat Protectant/Dressing

  • Core Function: Restores the deep black sheen of rubber and TPE materials, provides UV protection, and prevents material aging, cracking, and fading.
  • Most Important: Choose a “non-slip formula” or “anti-slip” product! Never use tire polish or ordinary dashboard wax, as these will make the floor mat surface extremely slippery, seriously affecting driving safety.

2.2 For Carpet/Fabric Floor Mats: Fabric Guard/Protectant

  • Core Function: Forms an invisible hydrophobic and oleophobic protective layer on the fabric fiber surface. Liquids (such as water or beverages) will form droplets, making them difficult to penetrate, and stains are easier to wipe away.
  • Usage: Apply after the floor mats are completely clean and dry. Spray evenly and then allow to air dry again. This can greatly reduce the difficulty of future cleaning.

3. Auxiliary tools

Tools Uses:
Stiff-bristled brush For scrubbing grooves and stubborn dirt on rubber/TPE floor mats.
Soft-bristled brush / Floor mat brush For scrubbing carpet/fabric floor mats, cleaning crevices without damaging fibers.
Vacuum cleaner (with crevice tool preferred) Quickly removes dust and debris.
Microfiber towel or car cleaning cloth For drying and wiping away cleaning residue; highly absorbent and lint-free.
Rubber squeegee Removes standing water, especially suitable for use after wet cleaning.
High-pressure water gun or hose Auxiliary Tools
Bucket, clean water Auxiliary Tools

III. Pre-treatment for All Car Floor Mats

1. Remove the floor mats.

  • Turn off the car engine and engage the handbrake to ensure safety.
  • Remove the floor mats one by one, starting from the driver’s side, to avoid shaking dust into the car.

2. Shake off large particles of debris.

  • Near a trash can or in an open area, shake the floor mats vigorously to remove sand, pebbles, and leaves.
  • Avoid shaking them near the car, as this will cause dust to float back into the vehicle.

3. Vacuum (Highly recommended if you have a vacuum cleaner).

  • Use a household/car vacuum cleaner and vacuum slowly in one direction. This is much cleaner than sweeping back and forth randomly.
  • Especially for coil floor mats, vacuum deeper to remove any sand that gets trapped inside.

IV. Cleaning Methods for Coil Floor Mats

1. Simple Daily Cleaning (Every 1-2 Weeks)

a. Shake and vacuum (as mentioned above).

b. Spray with water or diluted neutral detergent.

  • Dilute the detergent with water at approximately a 1:50 ratio; do not make it too concentrated.
  • Spray evenly onto the floor mat surface and let it sit for 2-3 minutes to soften the stains.

c. Use a soft brush (shoe brush, soft-bristled brush) to gently brush in one direction.

d. Rinse with clean water to remove excess foam and dirty water.

e. Air dry in a well-ventilated, shady place. Stand it upright against a wall to allow water to drain.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this may cause deformation and hardening.

2. Deep Cleaning (for oil stains, coffee, beverages, or large amounts of mud)

a. Place the floor mat on the ground and rinse it with a hose or shower to remove loose dirt.

b. Prepare a small amount of neutral laundry detergent or car interior cleaner. Do not use strong alkaline detergent.

c. Use a brush to focus on brushing: the heel area, the upper left corner of the driver’s seat, and crevices.

d. Rinse thoroughly with water several times until little foam remains.

e. Shake the mat a few times to remove excess water, then air dry in a shady place.

Important: Do not put the mats back in the car before they are completely dry, otherwise the interior will become damp, develop odors, and mold.

V. Cleaning Methods for Rubber/TPE/Plastic Floor Mats

This is actually the easiest.

1. Rinse with water:

Rinse directly with a hose; the dirt and sand will be washed away quickly.

2. Apply cleaner:

  • Spray some neutral detergent or dish soap (remember to dilute it), and scrub with a sponge or soft brush.
  • You can use an old toothbrush to scrub out any dirt spots in the grooves.

3. Rinse thoroughly:

Rinse off all foam and cleaner to avoid residue that makes the mats slippery.

4. Dry and air dry:

  • Roughly wipe with a dry towel and let them air dry in a well-ventilated area for a while.
  • These types of floor mats dry quickly, usually within a few tens of minutes.

It is not recommended to spray too much “tire shine” or similar products on the floor mats, as it will make them slippery, especially on the driver’s side, affecting safety.

VI. Cleaning Methods for Leather/Wrapped Floor Mats

These types of floor mats are susceptible to damage from soaking; the key is wiping, not washing.

1. Dry Wiping to Remove Dust
Use a dry or slightly damp towel to wipe away surface dust and sand.

2. Spot Cleaning
Use a neutral leather cleaner or a small amount of diluted dish soap. Apply a small amount to a soft cloth.

3. Gently rub the stain in circular motions.

Then wipe with a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining cleaner.

4. Dry with a Dry Cloth + Air Dry for a While

Do not rinse with strong water or soak, as this may cause the adhesive to peel off, the edges to curl, or the mat to crack.

If it’s a combination of “leather wrapping + coil mat”: Wipe the leather part; the coil part can be removed and washed separately.

VII. Cleaning Methods for Suede/Fabric Floor Mats

1. Vacuuming

First, thoroughly vacuum up dust, sand, and debris.

2. Spot Cleaning

For stains: Use fabric cleaner or foam cleaner.
Spray and gently scrub with a soft brush.

3. Deep Cleaning

Hand Wash: Soak in warm water with laundry detergent in a basin, then scrub.
Machine Wash: Some car floor mats are machine washable (see label instructions).

4. Rinse

Rinse repeatedly with clean water until no foam remains.

5. Spin-dry

Wring out as much water as possible or spin dry. Lay flat or hang in a cool, ventilated place to dry.
Avoid direct sunlight to prevent deformation and fading.

VIII. Precautions for Putting Them Back in the Car

1. They must be completely dry before putting them back in.

Especially for coil mats; if the inside is damp while the surface appears dry, they are prone to mold and musty smells when placed in the car.

2. Install correctly, ensuring it doesn’t obstruct the accelerator or brake pedals.

The driver’s side car floor mat must be securely fastened to the original car’s clips to prevent it from sliding and trapping the accelerator/brake pedals.

3. While you’re at it, vacuum the car’s carpets as well for a cleaner overall look.

IX. Cleaning Tips and Frequency Recommendations

  • Stubborn stains: Use baking soda, white vinegar, or a professional stain remover.
  • Regular cleaning: For everyday family cars (city driving conditions), clean every 2-4 weeks; for cars frequently driven to construction sites, rural areas, or during rainy days with lots of mud, clean once a week or more.
  • Odor removal: If there is a noticeable odor or dampness, it’s best to immediately remove and wash the car floor mats, then allow them to dry completely. After drying, you can spray them with an odor remover or place activated charcoal inside.
  • Complete drying: The floor mats must be completely dry before putting them back in the car to prevent mold and odors.

X. Precautions

Do not use overly harsh chemical cleaners to avoid damaging the material.

Clean the car floor: Clean the car floor while removing the floor mats.

Inspect the floor mats: Check for damage while cleaning and replace them promptly.

Regular cleaning of floor mats not only keeps the car interior clean but also extends the lifespan of the mats and enhances the driving experience!
